Family allowances in Sweden

Sweden pays a universal Barnbidrag of SEK 1,250/month per child (≈ €110), boosted for large families (Flerbarnstillägg). Parental leave — 480 days shared between parents — remains among the world’s most generous.

Barnbidrag — universal child benefit

Paid by Försäkringskassan to all residents with children:

  • SEK 1,250/month per child (≈ €110), no means test
  • Paid monthly from the month after birth until age 16
  • Förlängt barnbidrag extension until end of compulsory schooling
  • Beyond that, Studiebidrag from CSN (SEK 1,250/month) for upper-secondary studies

Flerbarnstillägg — large-family bonus

  • 2 children: +SEK 150/month
  • 3 children: +SEK 730/month
  • 4 children: +SEK 1,740/month
  • 5 children: +SEK 2,990/month
  • 6+ children: +SEK 1,250/month extra per child

Föräldrapenning — 480-day parental leave

Europe’s most generous scheme: 480 days per child, shared between parents:

  • 390 days at 80% of salary (capped ~SEK 37,500/month)
  • 90 flat-rate days at SEK 180/day
  • 90 days reserved for each parent (non-transferable — “daddy/mummy months”)
  • Usable until the child turns 12
  • Splittable at 25/50/75/100%

Tillfällig föräldrapenning — VAB

Benefits for care of a sick child (VAB):

  • Up to 120 days/year per child under 12
  • Paid at 80% of salary

Maxtaxa — capped childcare fees

  • 1st child: max SEK 1,688/month or 3% of income
  • 2nd child: max SEK 1,125/month or 2%
  • 3rd child: max SEK 563/month or 1%
  • 4th child and beyond: free
  • Ages 3–6: 525 hours/year free

Bostadsbidrag — family housing benefit

Means-tested, paid by Försäkringskassan: up to SEK 5,200/month for families with 3+ children.

Underhållsstöd — guaranteed maintenance

  • SEK 1,873/month per child under 11
  • SEK 2,223/month per child 11–14
  • SEK 2,723/month per child 15–17
