
Family allowances in Denmark
Denmark pays a universal benefit that decreases by age: Børne- og ungeydelse — DKK 4,950/quarter (≈ DKK 1,650/month) for ages 0–2, down to DKK 931/month for ages 15–17. Parental leave reformed in 2022: 24 weeks reserved per parent + 26 weeks shareable.
Universal Børne- og ungeydelse decreasing by age, paid quarterly by Udbetaling Danmark. 2022 reform of parental leave aligned with EU directive (earmarked leave). Subsidised nurseries (~DKK 4,000/month capped by income). Low-income families: additional Børnetilskud.
Børne- og ungeydelse — universal benefit
Paid by Udbetaling Danmark to all residents:
- 0–2: DKK 4,950/quarter (≈ DKK 1,650/month)
- 3–6: DKK 3,921/quarter (≈ DKK 1,307/month)
- 7–14: DKK 3,084/quarter (≈ DKK 1,028/month)
- 15–17: DKK 931/month (paid monthly)
Quarterly payment (except 15–17, monthly). No means test for income < DKK 887,000/year (phased out above).
Børnetilskud — targeted top-up
- Ordinært børnetilskud: DKK 1,660/quarter per child in single-parent family
- Ekstra børnetilskud: DKK 1,691/quarter per single-parent family (one only)
- Børnetilskud til pensionister: for retired/disabled parents
- Børnetilskud til adoption: DKK 56,935 lump sum on adoption
- Flerbørnstilskud: DKK 2,794/quarter/child for twins/triplets
Barselsorlov — parental leave (2022 reform)
Aligned with EU Directive 2019/1158, in force since August 2022:
- 4 weeks before birth for the mother
- 2 weeks after birth for each parent (mandatory)
- 9 weeks reserved for each parent (non-transferable)
- 26 weeks shareable freely
- Total: 52 weeks paid leave
- Benefit: 100% of salary up to the Dagpenge cap (~DKK 21,600/month)
Dagtilbud — nurseries and childcare
Dagtilbudsloven scheme:
- Place guaranteed in nursery from 26 weeks (vuggestue) or kindergarten from age 3 (børnehave)
- Fees capped at 25% of actual cost (max ~DKK 4,000/month)
- Reduction for income < DKK 645,000/year: 100% free below DKK 218,000/year
- Søskenderabat: 50% off on 2nd child in childcare
SU — Statens Uddannelsesstøtte
Generous student allowance for 18–22 year olds in higher education:
- Up to DKK 6,820/month living away from parents
- Can be combined with employment (capped)
- Progressively replaces Børne- og ungeydelse from age 18
Plejevederlag — leave for seriously ill child
Benefit for a parent forced to stop work to care for a seriously ill child. Paid at salary level up to the Dagpenge cap, up to 52 weeks.
