Family allowances in Chile

Chile pays an Asignación Familiar (AF) through Cajas de Compensación on 4 income bands (up to CLP 22,007/month per child), supplemented by the Subsidio Familiar (SUF) for non-contributing families. Parental leave of 30 weeks at 100% + 18-week pre/post-natal leave.

Asignación Familiar (AF)

Contributory benefit paid via Cajas de Compensación to all employees on 4 income bands:

  • Band A (≤ CLP 620,251/month income): CLP 22,007/month/child
  • Band B (CLP 620,251–905,941): CLP 13,505/month/child
  • Band C (CLP 905,941–1,412,957): CLP 4,268/month/child
  • Band D (> CLP 1,412,957): CLP 0 (no AF)
  • Paid until age 18 (24 if studying), no limit if disabled

Subsidio Familiar (SUF)

Non-contributory benefit for low-income families not eligible for AF:

  • CLP 22,007/month per child (same as Band A AF)
  • Conditions: Social Household Register (RSH) ≤ 60% of scale, child vaccination, school enrolment
  • Paid by IPS (Instituto de Previsión Social)
  • Beneficiaries: ~1.5 million children

Bolsa Familiar — Chile Seguridades y Oportunidades

Programme for families in extreme poverty:

  • CLP 40,000–80,000/month by family composition
  • Personalised social support (24 months)
  • ~170,000 beneficiary families

Bonos especiales — extra grants

  • Bono al Trabajo de la Mujer: bonus for working women 25–59 on low incomes
  • Bono por Hijo Nacido Vivo: pension bonus for mothers (1-year equivalent per child)
  • Aporte Familiar Permanente: annual lump sum of CLP 56,000 in March for SUF/AF Band A families

Parental leave — Postnatal Parental

Total 30-week parental leave:

  • Pre-natal: 6 weeks before birth
  • Post-natal: 12 weeks after birth
  • Postnatal Parental: 12 additional weeks (option 100% + 12 weeks, or 50% + 18 weeks)
  • Benefit: 100% of salary (capped at 78.3 UF, ~CLP 3,070,000/month)
  • Paid by FONASA / Isapre via the employer
  • Father can take 6 weeks (transferred from the mother)

Paternity leave — 5 days

Permiso del padre: 5 working days at 100% of salary, to use within the month after birth. A proposed reform would extend to 10 days.

Salas Cuna — workplace nurseries

Legal obligation (Art. 203 Código del Trabajo) for companies with 20+ women to provide a workplace nursery or fund an external nursery for children < 2. A 2024 reform aims to extend this regardless of gender.
