Family allowances in Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein pays a universal monthly Kinderzulage (child benefit) of CHF 280/month per child (CHF 340 from the 3rd child), and a Geburtszulage (birth grant) of CHF 2,300. System modelled on Switzerland, funded by employer contributions.

Kinderzulage — Universal child benefit

Benefit paid by Family Equalisation Fund (FAK):

  • 3rd child and beyond: CHF 340/month
  • No means test
  • Paid until age 18
  • Extended to 25 if studying (Ausbildungszulage)

Geburtszulage — Birth grant

  • CHF 2,300 flat at birth per child
  • Doubled for twins/triplets (CHF 4,600/6,900)
  • Paid by FAK
  • No means test

Mutterschaftsentschädigung — Maternity benefit

Maternity leave managed by Krankenkasse (health insurance):

  • 20 weeks of maternity leave (Liechtenstein-aligned reform 2024)
  • Benefit: 80% of average salary over last 12 months
  • Cap: CHF 200/day
  • Father: 2 weeks paternity leave at 80% (2022 law)

Alleinerziehendenzulage — Single-parent allowance

Bonus for single-parent families:

  • +CHF 100/month per dependent child
  • Paid by FAK on top of Kinderzulage
  • No means test

Bildungszulage — Training allowance

For children in higher studies (18–25):

  • CHF 340/month per child in training
  • Conditions: enrolment in recognised training
  • Paid until age 25 maximum

Nurseries — Kindergarten

Communal nurseries for 1–6:

  • Means-modulated fees: CHF 300–900/month
  • 50% reduction for 2nd child
  • Coverage expanding
  • Pre-school from age 4 (compulsory Kindergarten 2 years)
