Family allowances in Lithuania

Lithuania pays a universal Vaiko pinigai of €122.75/month per child since 2024, among the most generous in the Baltic states. Motinystės/tėvystės/vaiko priežiūros išmoka: parental leave 24 months at 60–77.58% of salary depending on chosen formula.

Vaiko pinigai — universal child benefit

Paid by SODRA to all resident children:

  • €122.75/month per child (2024 uprating)
  • No means test
  • Paid until age 18 (or 21 if upper-secondary studies)
  • Monthly direct payment to parent’s bank account

Vaiko pinigų papildomas — targeted top-up

Top-up to the universal Vaiko pinigai:

  • +€73.65/month for low-income families (income/person ≤ 50% of average wage)
  • +€73.65/month for families with 3+ children (no means test)
  • +€73.65/month for families with a disabled child
  • Stackable if multiple criteria met

Vienkartinė išmoka vaikui — birth grant

  • €528 per birth or adoption (11× SSI minimum in 2025)
  • One-off payment by SODRA
  • Doubled for twins

Maternity, paternity and parental leave

Maternity leave (motinystės): 126 days (70 before + 56 after birth), 77.58% of salary (max ~€3,250/month).

Paternity leave (tėvystės): 30 days at 77.58% of salary (2022 reform, to be taken within 12 months of birth).

Parental leave (vaiko priežiūros): 2 options:

  • 1 year at 77.58% of salary (max ~€3,250/month)
  • 2 years: 54.31% in 1st year + 31.03% in 2nd year
  • Paid by SODRA
  • 2 months reserved per parent (non-transferable)

Šeimos kortelė — large-family card

For families with 3+ children: free card giving access to:

  • 10–30% discounts at partners (transport, culture, sport, shops, telecoms)
  • 50% off LTG Link rail transport
  • Property tax reductions in some municipalities

Nurseries — Lopšeliai-darželiai

Public nurseries for 1.5–7 run by municipalities:

  • Vilnius: ~€50–150/month by income
  • Kaunas, Klaipėda: similar
  • Free for very low-income families
  • Priority for families 3+ children and single parents
