# Taking an online course: lessons, quizzes and assignments

An online course is taken in Illizeo's **course player**: an outline on the left, the lesson in the middle, and buttons to move on. This article explains how to open a course, how each type of lesson is completed, how to take a quiz, hand in an assignment and use the artificial intelligence help. It is for every employee taking a course.

## Before you start

- The **Training** module must be enabled for your organisation, and one of your roles must hold the **My training space** permission (FORMATION section of the role matrix).
- The course must be published. You can read a published course even before enrolling; enrolment is done from its course page (see [Your training space](https://illizeo.com/en/centre-aide/training-learner-space/)).
- The artificial intelligence help only appears if AI is enabled for your organisation and one of your roles holds the **Learning assistant (AI)** permission at the **Execute** level.

## Opening a course

Several routes lead to the course player:

- **Training › My home**: the **Resume** button in the banner, or a card in the "In progress" section;
- **Training › Lessons in progress**: **Resume** next to a lesson;
- **Training › Catalog**: a course page, then **Enrol** (the player opens straight away) or **Resume**;
- **Training › My path**: **Start** on an "Online course" step.

The player reopens the last lesson you opened, on any device.

## The course player

- At the top: the course title and the **Progress** bar, as a percentage. Only mandatory lessons count: an "Optional lesson" does not move the bar.
- The **Course outline** lists the modules and their lessons, with their type and a tick for those completed. On a small screen, open it with the **Outline** button.
- The lesson shows its module, its level, the "Mandatory" or "Optional lesson" label, its content and, where provided, a "Key takeaways" box.
- At the bottom: **Previous lesson**, **Mark as complete** and **Next lesson**. Next lesson completes the current lesson and moves on. The left and right arrow keys move between lessons without completing them; the Esc key closes the side panels.

## Lesson types and how they are completed

| Type | What you do | When the lesson is completed |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading | You read the text. | Mark as complete or Next lesson. |
| Video | You watch it; your playback position is remembered. | Mark as complete or Next lesson. |
| Document | The PDF is shown in the player; **Download** saves it. | Mark as complete or Next lesson. |
| Link | **Open the resource** opens the site in a new tab. | Mark as complete or Next lesson. |
| SCORM module | You work through the interactive module in the player. | When the module reports itself finished ("Module completed."). |
| Quiz | You answer the questions. | When you pass the quiz. |
| Assignment | You submit an answer or a file. | When your submission is accepted by the person reviewing it. |
| In person | You attend the classroom session. | When the trainer records your attendance. |

For a SCORM module, an assignment or an in-person session, the Mark as complete button does not appear: the evidence completes the lesson. An in-person lesson lists the course's upcoming sessions and shows whether you are registered; the "Register from the course page" link takes you to the course page.

## Taking notes

Below each lesson, the **My notes on this lesson** area keeps your personal notes; only you can see them. They save automatically ("Saved"). If saving fails, "Not saved — kept locally" means the note is kept in your browser.

## Taking a quiz

A quiz opens in the player, or full page from an "Assessment" step of your path (**Take it**).

![The course player open on a quiz: the question, its answers to choose from and the Submit button](https://i0.wp.com/illizeo.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/training-take-a-course-02.en_.png?resize=800%2C500&quality=80&ssl=1)
A quiz in the player: one question at a time.

1. Questions are shown one at a time ("Question 2 of 5"). If the quiz is timed, the time allowed is shown (for example "15 min"); once it has run out, answers are no longer accepted.
2. Answer, then click **Submit**. Depending on the quiz settings, you immediately see "Correct." or "Incorrect.", with an explanation.
3. Move on with **Next question**, then **Finish** on the last question.
4. The result shows "Quiz passed" or "Not yet", your score and the pass mark, the attempts left and a question-by-question breakdown.
5. If you have attempts left, **Try again** starts a new attempt.

There are seven question types: single choice, multiple choice ("Several answers possible."), true or false, short answer, fill in the blanks, ordering (putting items back in order) and matching (pairing each item with its counterpart).

- Closing the page mid-quiz does not use up an attempt: when you reopen it, you pick up the attempt where you left off.
- Once submitted, an answer cannot be changed.
- Some assessments do not show the correct answers: you see which questions you missed, not what the answer was.
- A quiz can gate the lesson: it then stays open until you pass it.

When you pass a quiz, the "Module completed" window confirms that your progress is saved; **Continue course** moves on to the next lesson.

## Handing in an assignment

1. Open the "Assignment" lesson and read the **Instructions**.
2. Write **Your answer** and, if the assignment accepts one, use **Attach a file (20 MB max.)**.
3. Click **Submit my work**. The status changes to "Under review" and the person in charge of the review is notified.
4. After the review, the status becomes "Accepted" (the lesson is completed) or "Returned", with the "Reviewer’s comment". A returned submission can be corrected and submitted again.

You are told the outcome of the review by email.

An assignment: read the instructions, answer, submit your work.

## Artificial intelligence help

When it is available, AI helps you in two ways:

- the **Assistant** button at the top of the player opens the "Training assistant" panel, grounded in the open lesson. Ask a question, or use a shortcut: **Summarise**, **Quiz me**, **Concrete example**, **Explain simply**;
- the **AI help** box in a lesson's text offers a **Mini summary** and **Practise (3 questions)**. Select a passage to get **Explain the selection** or **Practise on this passage**.

Answers are based on the course content and may contain mistakes. AI practice is free practice: nothing is graded or recorded, and it does not replace the course quiz.

## Good to know

- The progress bar only counts mandatory lessons; the course is complete once every mandatory lesson is completed.
- Opening a quiz starts an attempt, or resumes the one in progress. If attempts are limited, make sure you have time to finish.
- If a document or SCORM module does not display ("Please tell HR"), the file is missing on the course side: let HR know.

## FAQ

### Why is my assignment lesson not completed?

An assignment is only completed once your submission is accepted. While it is "Under review", the lesson stays open; if it is "Returned", read the comment and submit again.

### I cannot see the Assistant button.

AI is not enabled for your organisation, or your role does not hold the Learning assistant (AI) permission at the Execute level. Contact your administrator.
